On Tuesday, April 10, 2018 the Summit Academy team will go before the Board of Education for the last time before the BOE makes their decision to approve our charter application. Both BVSD staff and DAC have recommended approval with conditions that the SA team is confident we will be able to meet. We are thrilled to be at this point in the development of BVSD’s most innovative high school.

Community members have asked for more clarification about how SA is truly unique among schools in Boulder Valley. While some of the local schools offer components of our programming, you can see that we really are offering a model that does not exist in BVSD.

Summit Academy curriculum is built from rigorous academic standards, interdisciplinary/project-based learning, and character development. Students follow their passion for learning in five essential Learning Academies:

• Leadership/Social Enterprise/Entrepreneurship

• Social Science/Philosophy

• Communications Science/Math/Technology/Innovation

• History/English/Culture/World Language

• Arts/Performance/Creativity

Learning through the Academy model allows students to focus and specialize in an area of interest while also engaging in interdisciplinary studies and advanced learning with students who share similar interest. Students pursue coursework in the other learning communities which can be blended, compacted, or accelerated for personalization. Students in all learning communities have access to dual enrollment opportunities with local colleges and universities and prepare for Advanced Placement tests. Student Portfolios are built to align with advances in university and college requirements. Personalized learning pathway model expands existing models to include year-long crediting systems, competency-based feedback systems and portfolio-based/project-based performances. This system expands on the Summit Middle School success with National History Day, Science Fair and Pinnacle projects.

Summit Academy strives to be the only Boulder-based Global Focus school.  Global competencies are intrinsic in curriculum and our integration of a multicultural global community, such as our teachers in residence and a multi-language focus with global partner schools. The Global Focus concentrates on making a difference in the world and solving global problems. For the first three years, all students will experience project management, culminating in a year four internship. The Personalized Learning Pathway model includes year-long crediting systems, competency-based feedback systems and portfolio-based/project-based performances and advanced research projects.
